Element of Draw

I consider drawing to be a very important element in the process of making a work. It is how I begin the creative process. It forces me to think by means of symbols / images rather than verbalized concepts. The very act of drawing has significance for me, not just the end product, i.e. the finished image. When drawing, I migrate into my own world and immerse myself in a subjective monologue.

The space between my drafting table and the skin on my back is an intimate sphere, one that is enclosed and safe. In this piece, I was inspired by ancient drawing tablets to combine a wax cast of my back with my drafting table. The use of beeswax refers to its symbolic association with creative / utopian work.
