Earthwork
This sculpture shows a body lying on a bed of sand. The point of departure for this work was my strong emotional reaction to seeing people frozen in natural poses as they were going about their daily activities at the foot of Vesuvius in AD 79.
Observing these human forms in Pompeii I realized that figure sculpture is about bodies frozen in time. I made this work using wet clay, and therefore with the passage of time it became brittle and slowly disintegrated.
